The New START Treaty
(Statement by Press Secretary Norio Maruyama)

1. On February 5, 2018, the U.S and Russia respectively released a statement on the conclusion of the implementation duration regarding the central limits of the “Treaty between the United States of America and the Russian Federation on Measures for the Further Reduction and Limitation of Strategic Offensive Arms (The New START Treaty).”

2. The Treaty, regulating the reduction of nuclear warheads and their delivery vehicles, represents an important progress on nuclear disarmament by the U.S and Russia. Upon the conclusion of the implementation duration of the Treaty, Japan welcomes engagement on nuclear disarmament by both countries.

3. On this occasion, Japan strongly expects further advancement of global nuclear disarmament with the participation of the U.S. and the Russia as well as other nuclear-weapon States.

4. Japan will continue our utmost efforts to steadily advance steps towards the realization of "a world free of nuclear weapons".
