2nd Meeting of the Japan-Philippines Joint Committee on Infrastructure Development and Economic Cooperation
1. The second meeting of the Japan-Philippines Joint Committee on Infrastructure Development and Economic Cooperation was held today, July 7, in Manila, the Philippines. The meeting was attended by, on the Japanese side, Dr. Hiroto Izumi, Special Advisor to the Prime Minister, and on the Philippines side by Mr. Carlos G. Dominguez, Secretary of Finance and Mr. Ernesto M. Pernia, Secretary of National Economic and Development Authority.
2. During the Committee, the Japanese side extended condolences to those who were affected by the earthquake that struck the province of Leyte on Thursday, July 6. The Philippine side on the other hand extended condolences to those who were affected by the torrential rain in the Kyushu Region.
3. The first joint committee meeting was held in March 2017 in Tokyo, and issues discussed at the second round of the meeting included the ways in which the public and private sectors can cooperate towards the resolution of important challenges facing the Government of the Philippines. Topics covered infrastructure development, such as the subway project for Metro Manila, measures to address illegal drugs, peace building in Mindanao, and security and counterterrorism measures.
4. Both sides confirmed that close communication will be maintained through this joint committee, with a view to steadily implementing specific cooperation projects.

Japan-Philippines Joint Committee on Infrastructure Development and Economic Cooperation On his visit to the Philippines in January 2017, Mr. Shinzo Abe, Prime Minister of Japan, announced that Japan will provide one trillion yen in assistance over the next five years, including ODA and private-sector investment, establish a Joint Committee on Infrastructure Development and Economic Cooperation to coordinate this assistance, and steadily implement cooperation that engages the public and private sectors for state building. The first meeting of the joint committee was held in Tokyo on March 27.
