Dear Secretary Rex Tillerson,
I would like to extend my heartfelt congratulations on your inauguration as the U.S. Secretary of State.
Japan and the United States have been solid allies, bound in universal values such as freedom, democracy, human rights, and the rule of law.
The United States’ commitment is indispensable for the stability of the Asia-Pacific region, which is a driving force of the global economy. The Japan-U.S. Alliance is a cornerstone of peace and prosperity of the Asia-Pacific region, and its importance is becoming even greater as the security environment of the region becomes severer, as discussed at the Senate confirmation hearing that you attended.
I very much look forward to meeting with you at the earliest possible occasion for a candid exchange of views, and to working with you to further strengthen the unwavering tie between Japan and the United States.
Please accept my best wishes for your new endeavor.
Sincerely,
Fumio Kishida
Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan
