Overview of Security Sub-Committee (SSC) and Subcommittee for Defense Cooperation (SDC)

1. In the afternoon of October 8, in Tokyo, the meetings of Security Sub-Committee (SSC) and Subcommittee for Defense Cooperation (SDC) were held. From the Japanese side, Mr. Koji Tomita, Director-General of North American Affairs Bureau, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Tetsuro Kuroe, Director-General of Defense Policy Bureau, Ministry of Defense, and other officials attended. From the U.S. side, Mr. Daniel Russel, Assistant Secretary of State (East Asian and Pacific Affairs), Ambassador David Shear, Assistant Secretary of Defense (Asian and Pacific Security Affairs), and other officials attended.

2. At the SSC meeting, the two sides discussed the regional situation and the realignment of the U.S. forces in Japan, including impact mitigation on Okinawa.

3. At the SDC meeting, they discussed the revision of the Guidelines for Japan-U.S. Defense Cooperation. They concurred on the public release of the interim report on the revision of the Guidelines that they drew up at the meeting.

4. The Government of Japan will continue to work on the revision of the Guidelines in a vigorous manner.
