Statement by the Press Secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, on the appointment of Interim Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Thailand

1. The Ministry is aware that Mr. Prayut Chan-o-cha has been appointed as Interim Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Thailand. As Thailand's long-standing friend, Japan hopes strongly that this appointment serves as the first step in Thailand towards smooth and early transition to a democratic system through parliamentary elections.
2. Japan remains particularly attentive to the importance of the protection of basic rights and freedoms in Thailand.
3. The Government of Japan will continue to take necessary steps, including approaching the Interim Government, so as to ensure the safety of Japanese nationals and the smooth operation of Japanese companies in Thailand.
