Statement by the Minister for Foreign Affairs regarding an agreement between the ruling and opposition parties in Cambodia

July 22, 2014

1. The Government of Japan welcomes that an agreement was reached between the ruling and opposition parties of Cambodia for a political breakthrough on July 22. Japan has been keenly monitoring the situation, following the regrettable violence that occurred near the Freedom Park in Phnom Penh on July 15.

2. The Government of Japan has repeatedly called on relevant actors in Cambodia for an early agreement between the ruling and opposition parties, including my own effort during my recent visit. It is the strong hope of Japan that, in accordance with the agreement reached, national reconciliation and the prompt normalization of the National Assembly will be achieved, and that dialogue and cooperation will move forward toward the progress of various reforms, democratic process and nation-building, through constructive discussions at the Assembly.

3. The Government of Japan will continue to pay close attention to the situation in Cambodia, and support Cambodia’s efforts toward reform and nation-building.
