The Third Meeting for the U.S.-Japan Bilateral Commission on Civil Nuclear

1. The Third Meeting of the Bilateral Commission on Civil Nuclear Cooperation between Japan and the United States will be held on June 12, 2014 in Tokyo.

2. Mr. Shinsuke SUGIYAMA (Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs) from Japan and Mr. Daniel PONEMAN (Deputy Secretary, Department of Energy) from the United States will jointly serve as co-chairs of this meeting and government ministries concerned will participate from both countries.

3. At this meeting, an exchange of opinions is scheduled to take place in areas responding to the accident at TEPCO’s Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station, as well as safety and security, and R&D.

In the U.S.-Japan initiative announced at the U.S.-Japan summit held on April 30, 2012, Japan and the United States established a high-level Bilateral Commission on Civil Nuclear Cooperation to further strengthen cooperation in this field, building on the close U.S.-Japan cooperation following Japan’s March 2011 nuclear accident. The first meeting was held on July 24, 2012 in Tokyo and the second meeting was held on November 4, 2013 in Washington D.C.
