Opening of the Second Conference on the Humanitarian Impact of Nuclear Weapons

1. On February 13 and 14 the Second Conference on the Humanitarian Impact of Nuclear Weapons will be held in Nayarit, Mexico.

2. At this Conference, which will be hosted by the Government of Mexico, the various impacts of the use of nuclear weapons will be discussed from a scientific standpoint at expert-level, as a follow-up to a conference hosted by the Government of Norway in March last year.

3. A six-person delegation consisting of two officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (including Mr.Yasushi Noguchi, Director, Arms Control and Disarmament Division); Dr. Masao Tomonaga, President of the Japanese Red Cross Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Hospital; Mr.Toshiki Fujimori, Assistant Secretary General, Japan Confederation of A- and H-Bomb Sufferers Organizations; Ms.Masaki Koyanagi (first-year student at Kwassui High School, Nagasaki); and Ms.Yayoi Tsuchida, Assistant Secretary General, the Japan Council against Atomic and Hydrogen Bombs (interpreter), will represent the Government of Japan at the Conference.

4. As the only country to have ever suffered atomic bombings in war, Japan has until now endeavored to bring to the world’s attention the realities of the devastation caused by the use of nuclear weapons. Drawing on its accumulated knowledge and experience, Japan will also actively contribute to the discussion at the Conference.
