The Visit of Dr. Lassina Zerbo, Executive Secretary of the Preparatory Commission for the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organizations (CTBTO) to Japan

1. Dr. Lassina Zerbo, Executive Secretary of the Preparatory Commission for the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO) will visit Japan from 17 to 23 November 2013 by invitation of the Japanese government.

2. The Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT) is a treaty that bans any nuclear weapon test explosion or any other nuclear explosion at any place including in the atmosphere, in outer space, underwater and underground. The International Monitoring System (IMS), which is an essential element of the CTBT`s verification regime consisting of a global detection network, has played an effective role in the detection of the nuclear tests by North Korea.

3. Upon assuming the Executive Secretary this August, Dr. Zerbo has been making significant efforts for the early entry into force of the CTBT. Aiming at strengthening cooperation with Japan, during his visit he will meet high-level officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and experts on nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation to exchange views, give lectures at universities and visit Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
