Parliamentary Senior Vice-Minister Mitsuya’s meeting with Mr Dacian Ciolos, European Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development

On 11st November, Mr Norio Mitsuya, Parliamentary Senior Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs, held a meeting with Mr Dacian Ciolos, European Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The outline of the meeting is as follows.

1. Parliamentary Senior Vice-Minister Mitsuya stated that Japan and the EU are important partners based upon common values. Mr Mitsuya pointed out particular importance of the negotiations on the Japan-EU Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) in this respect and expressed Japan’s intention to make steady efforts for an early conclusion of the agreement.

2. Commissioner Ciolos explained that he was visiting Japan along with European business delegates to promote agricultural products carrying EU’s quality labels, and he expressed his expectation to take this opportunity to deepen understanding on Europe’s high-quality agricultural products among Japanese consumers, who place great importance on the quality and traditional manufacturing process of food products.

3. The two sides also exchanged views on issues such as Japan-EU relations and the Japan-EU EPA negotiations.
