Tenth Round of Joint Committee on ASEAN JAPAN Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement

1. The tenth round of the Joint Committee on the ASEAN Japan Comprehensive Economic Partnership (AJCEP) Agreement was held in Hamamatsu city, Shizuoka prefecture, Japan from October 29 to November 1.

2. From the Japanese side, Mr. Teiji Hayashi, Director for the Economic Partnership Division of the Economic Bureau, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (co-chair), and representatives from other relevant ministries attended the meeting. From the ASEAN side, Mr. Anngelo Salvador M. Benedictos, SEOM Leader, Department of Trade and Industry of Philippines (co-chair), and other representatives from the ASEAN countries attended the meeting. In this round of the Joint Committee, Sub-Committees were held and discussed on topics such as Trade in Services, Investment, and Rules of origin.

3. During the period of the Joint Committee, the mayor of the Hamamatsu city held welcome lunch, and the city promoted their own tourism and industry to the ASEAN representatives.

Hamamatsu city has promoted its international strategy especially with Asian countries. In the “Basic principles of Hamamatsu city’s strategic plan 2014” declared by the mayor, referring “‘connection’ to the world”, the city will “support its manufacturing industry’s expansion toward overseas with targeting emerging Asian countries, and further promote inbound strategy to gain more foreign tourists.” Based on its standpoint, Hamamatsu city suggested cooperation for the Joint Committee on AJCEP.
