Courtesy Call on Foreign Minister Taro Kono by General Robert B. Abrams

On May 14, Mr. Taro Kono, Minister for Foreign Affairs, received a courtesy call commencing from 3:15p.m. for approximately 25 minutes by General Robert B. "Abe" Abrams (Commander of United Nations Command/Combined Forces Command/United States Forces Korea) who was visiting Japan. The overview of the courtesy call is as follows.
- At the beginning, Foreign Minister Kono expressed his high appreciation to Gen. Abrams for the role that the U.S. Forces Korea (USFK) and United Nations Command (UNC) are playing in maintaining the stability in the region. Minister Kono also mentioned that the Government of Japan looks forward to continuing cooperation with the UNC in order to support the peace on the Korean peninsula.
- Gen. Abrams responded that he values Japan as a cooperative partner as USFK and UNC pursue stability in the region. The two leaders reaffirmed the longstanding partnership between Japan and the UNC.
- Both sides confirmed the importance that the international community as a whole supports the process between the U.S. and North Korea for peace and stability in the region.
