The “implementation day” of the final agreement on the Iranian nuclear issue
(Statement by Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida)
1. On January 17th (January16th CET), in Vienna, Dr. Mohammad Javad Zarif, Foreign Minister of Islamic Republic of Iran and Ms. Federica Mogherini, the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy announced the “Implementation Day” of the final agreement (JCPOA: Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action) on the Iranian nuclear issue.
2. The Government of Japan welcomes that the final agreement has reached the phase of implementation as a result of strenuous efforts made by all the negotiating parties and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The Government of Japan will actively support its implementation, including activities of the IAEA which has assumed the responsibilities for its monitoring and verification. The Government of Japan will also swiftly implement measures based on the provisions of the UN Security Council Resolution 2231.
3. For strengthening the international non-proliferation regime and stability of the Middle East, it is essential that the final agreement will continue to be observed. Seizing this opportunity of important progress, Japan will further strengthen the historically friendly relationship with Iran. Japan will actively cooperate for the steady implementation of the final agreement and encourage Iran to play further role towards the realization of the peace and stability of the Middle East through promotion of confidence building with the region and the international community.
