Overview

More than 200 million people around the world suffer from natural disasters every year. More than 90% of these are victims of climate-related disasters such as floods and droughts. More than 80% of all victims are concentrated in Asia. The economic losses resulting from natural disasters are estimated to exceed $140 billion per year on average. *

Natural disasters can obliterate the achievements of long-term development or community-building efforts in an instant. Building on lessons learned from the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and other past disasters, Japan is taking the lead in building a resilient society that will not be defeated by disasters, and mainstreaming disaster risk reduction in development and international cooperation.
