Reducing food waste at the G20 Osaka Summit

The G20 Osaka Summit has adopted the following initiatives to reduce food waste, which was identified as a significant global issue through its inclusion as Goal 12 (“Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns”) of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 2015.

Others 01 Procurement based on anticipated meal count

The G20 Osaka Summit organizers will seek to minimize food waste by using past experience in managing similar events, along with other means, to procure the minimal required number of meals through advanced estimation of attendee number with as much accuracy as possible.

Others 02 Informational materials promoting food waste reduction

Information addressing the issue of food waste reduction* will be placed in delegation restaurant and press dining within the G20 Osaka Summit venue to further promote international awareness of the appeal of Japanese cuisine and the issue of food waste reduction.

*Triangular prisms displaying “Loss-non,” the PR logo used by the Japanese government for its nationwide No-Foodloss Project, will be placed on buffet tables in delegation restaurant and press dining within the Summit venue. The logos will be accompanied by text in both Japanese and English.
