Japan-Qatar Summit Telephone Talk
On June 28, commencing at 4:40 p.m. for approximately 20 minutes, Mr. Shinzo Abe, Prime Minister of Japan, held a telephone talk with H.H. Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Emir of the State of Qatar. The overview of the telephone talk is as follows.
1. Regarding the recent situation surrounding Qatar, Prime Minister Abe stressed the importance of stability in the region and expressed his hope that the issue would be resolved through dialogues and the GCC would remain united in terms of the fight against terrorism and extremism. He also stated that Japan supported the mediation efforts made by Kuwait, and Japan hoped that this issue would be settled in a peaceful manner.
2. Sheikh Tamim, Emir of Qatar, responded that the relationship with Japan was important and that Qatar would not change its stance to stable supply of energy resources to Japan despite the current situation. He also mentioned that although there was difficulty with neighboring countries Qatar sought to avoid escalation and solve the issue in an amicable way.
3. Furthermore, Prime Minister Abe stated that Qatar was an important country to Japan and stressed that Japan was determined to further strengthen the comprehensive partnership with Qatar not only in the energy field but also in political, economic and security fields, to which Emir of Qatar responded that he felt likewise.
