Japan-United States of America Relations

On June 3, commencing at 8:25 a.m. for approximately 30 minutes, Mr. Fumio Kishida, Minister for Foreign Affairs, held a telephone talk with the Honorable Rex Tillerson, Secretary of State of the United States of America. The overview of the talk is as follows.

  1. The two sides welcomed the United Nations Security Council resolution which was adopted this time and affirmed the importance of further strengthening pressure on North Korea and that they will strengthen the coordination between Japan and U.S. and among Japan, the U.S. and the Republic of Korea (ROK), including at the United Nations.
  2. The two sides also agreed on the importance of China and Russia’s constructive role in dealing with the issue of North Korea, and shared the view that Japan and the U.S. will continue to collaborate to seek action from them.
  3. In addition, Minister Kishida expressed that the announcement by the U.S. on its withdrawal from the Paris Agreement is regrettable and stated his hope that Japan and the U.S. would seek ways to work together on the issue of climate change, and the two sides shared the view that Japan and the U.S. will explore such ways.
