Japan-Algeria Foreign Ministers’ Meeting

On September 12, from 2:40 p.m. for approximately 30 minutes, H.E. Mr. Taro Kono, Minister for Foreign Affairs, held a Foreign Ministers’ Meeting with H.E. Mr. Abdelkader Messahel, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of Algeria, during his visit to Egypt. The overview is as follows.
- In the beginning, Minister Kono expressed his gratitude to Algeria for serving as a chair for the Japan-Arab Political Dialogue and stated that Japan thinks highly of Algeria who contributes to the stability of the Middle East and Africa region, Minister Kono expressed his desire to work closely with Minister Messahel in order to strengthen both bilateral cooperation and that in the international field, taking the 55th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relationship this year as an opportunity,.
- In response, Minister Messahel reiterated extending his congratulations once again to Minister Kono upon his appointment as Minister for Foreign Affairs, and stated that he hopes to strengthen the Japan-Arab and Middle East relations, taking the Japan-Arab Political Dialogue which ended in success as an opportunity.
- Furthermore, Minister Kono expressed his strong hope that Japanese companies will contribute to the diversification of Algerian industries and the Ministers confirmed that they will work closely in order to reach an early conclusion of bilateral investment treaty. Minister Messahel also expressed his hope for more investment from Japan.
- Minister Kono, regarding North Korea as a threat to the international community, explained necessity for the international community to work collaboratively for exerting pressure upon North Korea and thus asked for understanding and cooperation from Algeria.
