On Decemberh 14, 2017, commencing at 10:21 a.m. for approximately 15 minutes, Mr. Shinzo Abe, the Prime Minister of Japan, received a joint courtesy call from leaders of international organizations attending the UHC Forum 2017. An overview of the meeting is as follows:

1. Participants

  • (1) Mr. Anthony Lake, Executive Director, United Nations Children’s Fund
  • (2) Dr. Marijke Wijnroks, Interim Executive Director, the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria
  • (3) Dr. Seth Berkley, Chief Executive Officer, Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance
  • (4) Dr. Alvaro Bermejo, Director-General of International Planned Parenthood Federation-designate

2. Summary of the dialogue

(1) Prime Minister Abe stated that, Japan has been promoting universal health coverage (UHC) which is indispensable for achieving SDGs, at the G7 Ise Shima Summit and TICAD VI and Japan would like to continue to promote UHC as "Japan brand" to achieve UHC by 2030 in collaboration with other organizations, and in particular, he expressed the gratitude to UNICEF for co-hosting the UHC Forum 2017.

(2) The participants from each institution appreciated Japan's leadership in the field of global health, including the hosting of the UHC Forum 2017, and they stressed their willingness to work together by utilizing the strengths of each institution to achieve UHC by 2030. Moreover, they also expressed their expectation for Japan to continue its contribution in the field of global health, particularly to achieve UHC.
