Logo for the 48th Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meeting (ATCM48)
The logo for ATCM48 to be held in Hiroshima, Japan from May 11 to 21, 2026 is now official.
1. What this logo means
The logo represents a robust image of unity, by combining a penguin inhabiting Antarctica with dynamic ocean waves, representing traditional Japanese colors: crimson, cobalt blue, iris purple, bamboo green, and golden yellow. These five colors intend to symbolize the Southern Ocean, Pacific Ocean, Atlantic Ocean, Indian Ocean, and Arctic Ocean, emphasizing the interconnectedness of the globe.
2. Use of logo
While this logo is used as the official logo for the series of events at government-sponsored official functions at ATCM48, all relevant stakeholders, including Antarctic Treaty Parties, international organizations, local governments, diplomatic missions, private companies, NGOs, civic groups, and others co-hosting ATCM48 with the Government of Japan, are invited to widely use the ATCM48 logo on the occasion of events that meet the following criteria below:
Criteria for using the logo
- The logo could be used for projects that meet either of the conditions below.
- (A) Projects or publicity materials for the purposes of the Antarctic Treaty.
- (B) Projects or publicity materials that contribute to the development of countries participating in the Antarctic Treaty Projects and Publications.
- Projects and Publications that fall under any of the followings will not be permitted even if they meet the conditions listed above.
- (A) Projects or publications that slander ATCM48 or cause misunderstanding regarding ATCM48
- (B) Projects or publications that are mainly conducted for commercial purposes eg; selling products and services, for profit
- (C) Projects or publications that serve the interest of a certain political party or political organization
- (D) Projects or publications that serve the interest of a certain religion, sect or religious group
- (E) Projects or publications related to activities or management of an organized criminal group
- (F) Projects or publications intended to promote fame of a certain individual or organization
3. Procedure for using the logo
Third parties other than the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, the Ministry of the Environment, the National Institute of Polar Research, the City of Hiroshima, and the Antarctic Treaty Secretariat must submit “Application for using the ATCM48 logo (Word)
” with required information and necessary documents, via email (by clearly stating “Submission of the ATCM48 logo application”) at least three weeks prior to the intended start date of use. The ATCM48 Host Country Secretariat will then notify you of the approval status.
4. Application period
Please submit your application by April 20, 2026, following the above procedures. In principle, the use of the logo should terminate December 31, 2026.
5. Notes
- Approval of using the logo does not imply financial support.
- Submitted documents will not be returned. Please prepare copies in advance if needed.
- Even if the use of ATCM48 logo is approved, all responsibility for using the logo and project implementation lies with the applicant. The Antarctic Treaty Secretariat, co-organizer of ATCM48, assumes no responsibility. Furthermore, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, the Ministry of the Environment, the National Institute of Polar Research, and the City of Hiroshima shall bear no responsibility whatsoever.
- After the use of ATCM logo, please submit a report summarizing the details and results of the logo use.
- If there are changes to the purpose or method of using the logo, or if the use is discontinued, please immediately notify us in writing.
- Even if approval is granted, if it is subsequently determined that the approval conditions are not met such as false application, use beyond the stated purpose, or violation of approval conditions the ATCM48 Host Country Secretariat may, if deemed necessary, request changes to the conditions of using the logo, revoke approval, or demand the return of items bearing the logo.
- The logo will be sent to the project requesting its use after approval. Please note that the use of the logo is permitted only on the media declared as the “means of logo use” during the application process.
- Applications must be submitted at least three weeks prior to the intended start date of logo use. Applications submitted less than three weeks in advance may not be approved.
- When using the logo, do not alter it. Maintain the specified clear space around the logo to avoid it appearing as part of another design. Even when reducing the size, ensure that the text remains legible.
For details, follow the “Guidelines for using the ATCM48 logo” below. - Organizations certified for thematic events or partner projects may include the ATCM48 logo on business cards of their members, provided it is not used for profit purposes. However, in such cases, the following statement must always be included: “The organization (or our company, etc.) hosts a thematic event at ATCM48.” or “The organization (or our company, etc.) hosts (or will host) a partner project for ATCM48.”
