Japan and the United Nations
Courtesy Call on Prime Minister Suga by H.E. Mr. Abdulla Shahid,
President-elect of the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly

On August 27, commencing at around 3:35 p.m. for approximately fifteen minutes, Mr. SUGA Yoshihide, Prime Minister of Japan, received a courtesy call by H.E. Mr. Abdulla Shahid, President-elect of the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) (Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Maldives), who is visiting Japan upon the invitation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan. The overview of the meeting is as follows:
- At the outset, Prime Minister Suga congratulated Mr. Abdulla Shahid, President-elect of the 76th session of the UNGA on his election and expressed his expectation for the leadership of the President-elect in addressing challenges faced by the United Nations. In response, President Shahid expressed his appreciation for the invitation from Japan and commended Japan for its commitment in the multilateral fora, including the United Nations.
- Prime Minister Suga stated his expectation for President Shahid's leadership in realizing the UN Security Council reform. The two sides concurred to cooperate closely on Afghanistan, and both sides exchanged views on addressing issues related to North Korea. Prime Minister Suga sought understanding and cooperation towards the immediate resolution of the abductions issue, to which President Shahid offered his support.
- The two sides confirmed to cooperate further to build back better after the COVID-19 pandemic including through holding the Tokyo Nutrition for Growth Summit 2021 in December this year.
