Foreign Minister IWAYA Attends Munich Security Conference

On February 15, commencing at 4:30 p.m. local time (0:30 a.m. on February 16, JST) for approximately 50 minutes, Mr. IWAYA Takeshi, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, attended a panel discussion at the 61st Munich Security Conference in the session “It's a Small World? The Connected Security of Europe and Asia”. The overview of the session is as follows.
- In the panel discussion, Minister Iwaya asserted the need to realize a “Free and Open Indo-Pacific (FOIP),” as well as the importance of the coordination among allies and like-minded countries including Japan-U.S. Alliance, Japan-Australia-India-U.S. (Quad), Japan-U.S.-Republic of Korea (ROK), under the recognition that the security of Euro-Atlantic and Indo-Pacific are inseparable. Responding to the question from a moderator, Minister IWAYA stated on realizing the just and lasting peace in Ukraine and the importance of peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait.
- During the panel discussion, other participants introduced their countries’ security policies and initiatives in Euro-Atlantic and Indo-Pacific, and panelists had a lively discussion on topics such as policy toward China, the situation in Ukraine, the advancement of military cooperation between Russia and North Korea, and cooperation among allies and like-minded countries.
