On July 4, Mr. FUKAZAWA Yoichi, Parliamentary Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs held a meeting with Ms. Ghada Waly, Executive Director of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) who is visiting Japan. The overview is as follows.

  1. At the outset, Parliamentary Vice Minister Fukazawa welcomed Executive Director Waly’s visit to Japan and stated that, as the free and open international order based on the rule of law is severely challenged in an international community at a historical turning point, the importance of UNODC's mandates to promote the "rule of law" are becoming even more important in emerging and developing countries.
  2. Executive Director Waly stated that globalization and the development of information and communication technology have made crimes more complex and transnational, and introduced UNODC's efforts to address these threats, expressing wishes to work even more closely with Japan, a major donor and strategic partner to the UNODC.
  3. They exchanged a wide range of views on promotion of Women, Peace, and Security (WPS), further cooperation between Japan and UNODC, how to increase the number of Japanese staffs, as well as cooperation with Africa in anticipation of TICAD 9 to be held in 2025.

UNODC was established in 1997 as a result of the merging of the United Nations International Drug Control Programme and the Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice Programme. Headquartered in Vienna, UNODC carries out research and analyses on illegal drugs and crime, helps countries with the conclusion and execution of conventions related to crime and narcotic drugs and with the development of domestic legislation, and provides technical cooperation for capacity building in countering organized crime and terrorism.
