Japan-United Kingdom Relations

On April 10, during the Japan-UK Foreign Ministers’ Meeting on the occasion of the G7 Hiroshima Meeting, Mr. Fumio Kishida, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, and the Rt Hon Philip Hammond MP, Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs of the UK confirmed that both Japan and the UK would promote the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime’s (UNODC) Project “Improving Border Security in Tunisia” by making respective contributions, as part of concrete Japan-UK collaboration in assistance for developing countries in the area of security and defense which was confirmed at the Second Japan-UK Foreign and Defence Ministers’ Meeting (“2+2”) held in January 2016.
Both ministers affirmed the importance of Japan-UK cooperation in the area of security and defense, including counter-terrorism measures, and agreed to continue to promote collaboration in Asia and Africa.

Reference: Project “Improving Border Security in Tunisia”

• This is a UNODC Project that is mainly for Tunisia’s Ministry of Interior’s Foreigners and Borders Directorate aiming at enhancing their capabilities to analyze risk information and threat at border locations and strengthening information-sharing mechanisms. Specifically, the project intends to implement multiple training sessions for risk information analysis officers, investigative agents, administrative border control employees, and others.
• Japan provided 300,000 US dollars in its fiscal 2015 supplemental budget, and the UK also decided to contribute 500,000 pounds.
