Japan-Estonia Relations
Meeting between Prime Minister Abe and President Kaljulaid of the Republic of Estonia


On October 24, commencing at 4:55 p.m. for approximately 15 minutes, Mr. Shinzo Abe, Prime Minister of Japan, held a meeting with Ms. Kersti Kaljulaid, President of the Republic of Estonia. The overview of the meeting is as follows. The meeting was also attended by Mr. Akihiro Nishimura, Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary, Mr. Eiichi Hasegawa, Special Advisor to the Prime Minister, Mr. Takaya Imai, Special Advisor to the Prime Minister and others from the Japanese side, and by Mr. Väino Reinart, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Estonia to Japan, Mr. Lauri Kuusing, Foreign Policy Adviser to the President and others from the Estonian side.
1. Prime Minister Abe welcomed President Kaljulaid’s visit to Japan and stated, “I am pleased that Japan-Estonia relations have been enhanced through frequent high-level visits.” In response, President Kaljulaid expressed her condolence for the devastation caused by Typhoon Hagibis, and expressed her congratulations on the enthronement of His Majesty the Emperor and the opening of the Reiwa Era.
2. Prime Minister Abe stated, “Japanese side highly values the potential of Estonia in the economic field, and Keidanren will dispatch a business mission to the Baltic States next month. Through Japan-Baltic Cooperation Dialogue, which was established last year, I hope further development of economic relations between Japan and the Baltic States, as well as cooperations regarding common challenges of international community. I also expect that trade and investment between our two countries will be boosted under the Japan-EU Economic Partnership Agreement, which entered into force in February this year.” In response, President Kaljulaid mentioned the development of cooperation including Japan’s cooperation with the NATO Cooperative Cyber Defence Centre of Excellence, the cooperation through the Japan-Baltic Cooperation Dialogue and public-private cooperation such as in the fields of IT and cyber. Both sides confirmed their intention to further advance such cooperation.
3. Prime Minister Abe asked for Estonia’s understanding and cooperation for the early resolution of the abductions issue.
