Japan-EU Relations

  1. On January 31, the second meeting of the Joint Committee under the Japan-EU Strategic Partnership Agreement (SPA), co-chaired by Mr. Yasushi Masaki, Director-General of the European Affairs Bureau, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Mr. Gunnar Wiegand, Managing Director for Asia and the Pacific, European External Action Service, was held in Brussels.
  2. It was held on the occasion of the first anniversary of the provisional application of the Japan-EU SPA as of February 1, 2019, and Japan and the EU took stock and discussed the future issues and the implementation of the Japan-EU SPA, focusing on cooperation based on “the Partnership on Sustainable Connectivity and Quality Infrastructure between Japan and the EU” signed by the both leaders in September last year in Brussels. Japan and the EU shared the view to continue enhancing cooperation in such fields as sustainable connectivity, quality infrastructure and global issues including environment as well as security policy in accordance with SPA.
  3. Japan and the EU also exchanged views on regional situations in which the both sides are interested.
