Japan-Kyrgyz Republic Relations

On October 23, commencing at 1:00 p.m. for approximately 10 minutes, Mr. Shinzo Abe, Prime Minister of Japan had a meeting with H.E. Mr. Sooronbai ZHEENBEKOV, President of the Kyrgyz Republic. The overview of the meeting is as follows.

1. Opening Remarks

Prime Minister Abe welcomed the visit of President Zheenbekov to Japan and stated that “since my visit to the Kyrgyz Republic in 2015, bilateral relationship has been developed in a wide range of areas, such as exchanges among members of Parliament, economy and culture. I would like to establish closer relationship with the Kyrgyz Republic together with President Zheenbekov.
In response, President Zheenbekov celebrated the successful implementation of the Ceremonies of the Accession to the Throne.

2. Bilateral Relations

Prime Minister Abe stated that “Japan attaches great emphasis to the relationship with Kyrgyz Republic which shares the fundamental values, and will continue to support democratization and economic development of the Kyrgyz Republic”, and Japan “gives importance to high quality infrastructure which is in line with international standards” and “development of the human resources which contribute to development of the Kyrgyz Republic”.
In response, President Zheenbekov appreciated Japan’s long-lasting support such as JICA’s marvelous activity and stated that bilateral relationship has been significantly developed since Prime Minister Abe’s visit to the Kyrgyz Republic in 2015.

3. Economic/business interaction

Prime Minister Abe stated that “I would like to accelerate the negotiation of an Investment Agreement to activate interaction in economy and business of both countries”.
In response, President Zheenbekov referred to Japanese companies’ expansion to the Kyrgyz Republic and stated that the President Zheenbekov would like to develop cooperation with Japan, emphasizing small and medium enterprises.

4. International situations

Prime Minister Abe sought understanding and cooperation on the early resolution of the abductions issue.
