Free Trade Agreement (FTA) and Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA)

On 20th March 2024 in London, based on the discussions held during the Second Meeting of the Working Groupon Trade and Women’s Economic Empowerment (January 2023), established pursuant to the Japan-UK CEPA, consultations were conducted regarding the implementation of the Chapter on Trade and Women’s Economic Empowerment. These consultations were held between the Japanese co-chair of the said Working Group, Mr. KOYAMA Takeshi, Director of the European Union Economic Affairs Division of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and officials from the UK Department for Business and Trade, with a presence of private sector expert on this field.

Both sides exchanged information on efforts related to trade and the women’s economic empowerment in their respective countries, and discussed how to implement concrete collaboration between Japan and the UK in the future. Both sides affirmed their intention to continue collaborating closely on this field.

On this occasion, several other meetings have also been held for exchange of information, experiences, lessons learnt and for networking among experts in this field from the private sector.

  1. The Working Group on Trade and Women's Economic Empowerment established pursuant to Article 23.4 shall be responsible for furthering shared objectives of enhancing the ability of women to fully access and benefit from the opportunities created by trade, for implementing cooperation activities referred to in Article 21.2, ensuring that the development of such activities is carried out with the inclusive participation of women, and for providing opportunity for monitoring and review as may be agreed by the Parties.
  2. The Working Group on Trade and Women's Economic Empowerment shall meet at such times and venues, or by such means, as may be agreed by the Parties.
