Nuclear Disarmament and Non-Proliferation

  1. On December 11, the Japan-NATO Staff Talks on Arms Control, Disarmament and Non-Proliferation took place in Tokyo. This staff talks served as an important platform for deepening discussions between Japan and the NATO on arms control, disarmament and non-proliferation, in light of the Japan-NATO Individually Tailored Partnership Programme (ITPP), concluded in July 2023.
  2. At the staff talks, Japan and the NATO exchanged views on a wide range of important current issues in the areas of disarmament and non-proliferation, including nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation, arms control, regional issues, and biological and chemical weapons. Both sides reaffirmed the importance of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) and concurred to continue consultations in these areas.
  3. The Japanese side was represented by Mr. ISHIKAWA Wataru, Director for Arms Control and Disarmament Division and Mr. FURUMOTO Tatsuhiko, Director for Non-Proliferation, Science and Nuclear Energy Division, while the NATO side was represented by Ms. Eirini Lemos-Maniati, Head of Arms Control, Disarmament, and WMD Non-Proliferation.
