Japan-NATO Staff Talks on Arms Control, Disarmament and Non-Proliferation

- On December 11, the Japan-NATO Staff Talks on Arms Control, Disarmament and Non-Proliferation took place in Tokyo. This staff talks served as an important platform for deepening discussions between Japan and the NATO on arms control, disarmament and non-proliferation, in light of the Japan-NATO Individually Tailored Partnership Programme (ITPP), concluded in July 2023.
- At the staff talks, Japan and the NATO exchanged views on a wide range of important current issues in the areas of disarmament and non-proliferation, including nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation, arms control, regional issues, and biological and chemical weapons. Both sides reaffirmed the importance of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) and concurred to continue consultations in these areas.
- The Japanese side was represented by Mr. ISHIKAWA Wataru, Director for Arms Control and Disarmament Division and Mr. FURUMOTO Tatsuhiko, Director for Non-Proliferation, Science and Nuclear Energy Division, while the NATO side was represented by Ms. Eirini Lemos-Maniati, Head of Arms Control, Disarmament, and WMD Non-Proliferation.
