Disarmament and Non-Proliferation, Peaceful Uses of Nuclear Technology

On February 20, commencing at 2:37 p.m. for approximately 30 minutes, Mr. ISHIBA Shigeru, Prime Minister of Japan, received a courtesy call from Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Rafael Mariano Grossi. The Summary of the courtesy call is as follows.

  1. Prime Minister ISHIBA expressed his gratitude to DG Grossi for the IAEA's cooperation in the process of reconstruction of Fukushima, such as the decommissioning of the Tokyo Electric Power Company's Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station including the discharge of ALPS treated water into the sea, and stated that Japan looks forward to continuing close cooperation. In response, DG Grossi stated that the IAEA would continue its cooperation with Japan's efforts, including confirmation of the safety of the discharge of ALPS treated water.
  2. Prime Minister ISHIBA expressed Japan’s support for DG Grossi’s efforts to respond to the growing global demand for nuclear energy, and continued that promotion of peaceful uses of nuclear energy and nuclear non-proliferation are even more important in this significantly changing international situation, and Japan intends to continue cooperating closely with the IAEA, looking ahead the next year's NPT Review Conference. In response, DG Grossi stated that the visit to the TEPCO's Kashiwazaki-Kariwa Nuclear Power Station was a fruitful opportunity to understand Japan’s nuclear energy policy. Also DG Grossi expressed his gratitude for Japan's continuous support for the IAEA's efforts, and stated that the IAEA would like to strengthen cooperation with Japan also in the area.
  3. The two sides also discussed North Korea’s nuclear issues and concurred to continuing close cooperation on this matter.
