Nuclear Disarmament and Non-Proliferation
International Atomic Energy Agencu (IAEA) Governors Invited to Japan



- Five Governors (India, Argentina Republic (current Chairman of the IAEA Board of Governors), Burkina Faso, Australia, People's Republic of Bangladesh) of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) visited Japan from February 12 to 16 at the invitation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
- They visited TEPCO's Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station and the TEPCO Decommissioning Archive Center, where they observed the relevant sites and the efforts of Japan regarding decommissioning of the stationand the discharge of ALPS treated water into the sea. They visited Remains of the earthquake Namie Town Ukedo Elementary School where they touched the reality of the earthquake too. They were welcomed by Fukushima Medical University, Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA), Integrated Support Center for Nuclear Nonproliferation and Nuclear Security (ISCN), and National Institute for Quantum Science and Technology Agency (QST) to see Japan's most advanced technologies in fields such as radiology, nuclear nonproliferation, nuclear fusion research, and exchanged those experts. In Tokyo, they paid a courtecy call on Mr. TSUJI Kiyoto, State Minister for Foreign Affairs and received briefings on Japan's nuclear policy from senior officials of the relevant ministries.
- The participating Governors commented that, by visiting each site through this time trip, they were able to further deepen their understanding of the longstanding efforts and actionsby the Japanese government and related parties for the decommissioning of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station and reconstruction, as well as Japan's advanced technologies for peaceful uses of nuclear energy.
The IAEA, as one of its main objectives, has been promoting the peaceful uses of nuclear energy and its applications in the fields of medicine, environment, and food security, as well as conducting various technical cooperation activities for developing countries. The peaceful uses of nuclear energy has been attracting more and more attention in recent years as a means of contributing to the resolution of global issues and the achievement of the SDGs.
The IAEA designates and elects 35 countries as the members states of the Board of Governors, and the Ambassadors to Permanent Representative of those states to the International Organizations in Vienna serve as members of the Board. The Board of Governors consists of the designated member states (advanced nuclear nations, including Japan) and elected members (two-year terms).
The purpose of this invitation is to further deepen the international community's understanding of Japan's initiatives in various fields such as peaceful uses of nuclear energy, discharge of the ALPS treated water to the sea, nuclear non-proliferation, and research and development of nuclear fusion. This time they made the following visits and courtesy calls (*in order of schedule).
