Disarmament and Non-Proliferation, Peaceful Uses of Nuclear Technology

On April 10, commencing at around 11:00 a.m. for approximately 30 minutes, Mr. Shinzo Abe, Prime Minister of Japan, received a courtesy call from Mr. Yukiya Amano, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The outline of the meeting is as follows.

1. Prime Minister Abe stated as follows; it is essential that all weapons of mass destruction and ballistic missiles of North Korea be abandoned in a complete, verifiable, and irreversible manner; it is important to make the most of the IAEA’s expertise and experience in order to avoid the repetition of the mistakes in the past.

2. Director General Amano explained about the IAEA’s status of preparation and the importance of establishing a stringent verification system toward denuclearization of North Korea in light of the past experience of the IAEA.

3. Prime Minister Abe and Director General Amano exchanged views on the situation of Iran.

4. Also, Prime Minister Abe agreed with Director General Amano to continue close cooperation with the IAEA.
