THE VISIT OF THE OPCW EXECUTIVE COUNCIL DELEGATION TO THE ABANDONED CHEMICAL WEAPONS DESTRUCTION SITES

From September 18 to September 22, the Government of Japan, together with the Government of the People’s Republic of China, hosted the visit by the Delegation representing the Executive Council (EC) of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) to the sites related to the Abandoned Chemical Weapons (ACW) destruction project.
- Delegates from 15 countries, including the Chairperson of the EC, and H.E. Mr. Fernando Arias, Director-General of the OPCW, participated in the visit to observe the ACW destruction Project sites in Heilongjiang and Jilin provinces in China. The Japanese side was represented by Ms. HAYASHI Mitsuko, Deputy Director General of Disarmament, Non-Proliferation and Science Department, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Chinese side was represented by Mr. Li Chijiang, Deputy Director General, Department of Arms Control, Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
- During the visit, the participants visited the ACW excavation and recovery sites and the recently expanded destruction facilities. They were briefed on efforts to ensure the safe and steady excavation, recovery, and destruction of ACW.
- Japan, as a whole-of-government effort, will continue working with China and the OPCW to complete the ACW destruction projects as soon as possible.
