On October 30, commencing at 8:45 a.m. for approximately 15 minutes, Ms. TAKAICHI Sanae, Prime Minister of Japan, received a courtesy call from Mr. Kazumi Matsui, Mayor of Hiroshima and Mr. Shiro Suzuki, Mayor of Nagasaki and their respective delegations.
- At the outset, Mayor Matsui and Mayor Suzuki handed Prime Minister TAKAICHI a petition on the response by the Government of Japan to the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW). Following this, the two Mayors provided an overview of the petition.
- In response, Prime Minister TAKAICHI stated that it is Japan’s mission, as the only country to have ever suffered atomic bombings during war, to lead efforts towards a world without nuclear weapons. She also stated that the response to the TPNW, which is an important treaty that could serve as an exit towards a world without nuclear weapons, must be considered in light of the international situation and from the perspective of what would be truly effective in ensuring Japan's security and achieving substantive progress in nuclear disarmament. Furthermore, she expressed her determination to continue persistently pursuing realistic and practical efforts under the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) regime, while keeping in mind the sentiments of the people of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and the hibakusha or atomic bomb survivors.
- The two sides exchanged views including on efforts towards nuclear disarmament.
