Nuclear Disarmament and Non-Proliferation
Courtesy Call on Prime Minister TAKAICHI by Mr. Matsui, Mayor of Hiroshima and Mr. Suzuki, Mayor of Nagasaki

On April 9, commencing at 4:00 p.m. for approximately 15 minutes, Ms. TAKAICHI Sanae, Prime Minister of Japan, received a courtesy call from Mr. Matsui Kazumi, Mayor of Hiroshima and Mr. Suzuki Shiro, Mayor of Nagasaki and their respective delegations. The overview is as follows:
- At the outset, Mayor Matsui and Mayor Suzuki handed Prime Minister TAKAICHI a petition on upholding the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) regime and efforts toward the abolition of nuclear weapons. Following this, the two Mayors provided an overview of the petition.
- In response, Prime Minister TAKAICHI stated that as the only country to have ever suffered atomic bombings during war, Japan has a historic mission to lead efforts towards a world without nuclear weapons. Further, Prime Minister TAKAICHI stated that at the upcoming NPT Review Conference, Japan seeks to make its utmost efforts to realize an outcome that is acceptable to both nuclear-weapon states and non-nuclear-weapon states. In addition, Prime Minister TAKAICHI stated that Japan seeks to continue to steadily make efforts while embracing the sentiment of the atomic bomb sites (Hiroshima and Nagasaki) and Hibakushas (atomic bomb survivors) and through obtaining their cooperation.
- The two sides exchanged views including on efforts towards nuclear disarmament.
