At approximately 11:00 a.m. local time on April 28 (0:00 a.m. Japan time), Mr. IWAYA Takeshi , Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, delivered a statement at the General Debate of the Third Session of the Preparatory Committee for the 2026 Review Conference of the Treaty on the Non Proliferation of Nuclear Weapon s (NPT), currently being held in New York.

  1. In his statement, Foreign Minister Iwaya stated that, at a time when the international order based on the rule of law is being challenged and the frameworks for international cooperation based on multilateralism, including the NPT, also face difficulties, it is necessary to make efforts to ease divisions in the international community and to restore and strengthen the functioning of international cooperation frameworks based on multilateralism. Foreign Minister Iwaya went on to call on all State Parties to cherish and exercise the spirit of dialogue and collaboration to this end and work together at next year’s NPT Review Conference.

Foreign Minister Iwaya, while introducing the recommendations of the International Group of Eminent Persons for a World without Nuclear Weapons as an eloquent example of how engaging in sincere dialogue and constructive discussion can create a wisdom, even in this increasingly divided world, appealed to all countries to fulfill their responsibility to find out a common ground , in order to maintain and strengthen the NPT architecture, which is the only universal framework for nuclear disarmament and non proliferation and to advance toward the realization of a world without nuclear weapons.
