Prime Minister Abe Receives a Courtesy Call from the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency

On Wednesday March 30 commencing at 5:45 p.m. for approximately 30 minutes, Mr. Shinzo Abe, Prime Minister of Japan, who is currently visiting the United States (Washington) to attend the Nuclear Security Summit, received a courtesy call from Mr. Yukiya Amano, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The overview of the call is as follows.
- Director General Amano explained the IAEA’s efforts to strengthen nuclear security, verify and monitor the Nuclear Agreement with Iran, address the North Korean nuclear issue, and promote the peaceful use of nuclear energy. Furthermore, he expressed gratitude for Japan’s contributions to the IAEA’s activities and commented that the IAEA hopes to continue close cooperation.
- In response, Prime Minister Abe emphasized the importance of the IAEA’s role in strengthening nuclear security and expressed Japan’s favorable view of the IAEA’s initiatives and its intention to continue supporting IAEA efforts. He also commented that Japan plans to contribute to further developments of IAEA activities under Director General Amano’s leadership.
