Fifth Meeting of the International Commission on Nuclear Non-Proliferation and Disarmament (ICNND)

  1. The fifth and final meeting of the International Commission on Nuclear Non-proliferation and Disarmament, co-chaired by the Hon. Yoriko Kawaguchi, former Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, and the Hon. Gareth Evans AO, former Minister for Foreign Affairs of Australia, will be held in Vienna, Austria from July 3 (Sat) to 4 (Sun).

  2. In December last year, the Commission completed its report which includes specific recommendations and presented it to the Prime Ministers of Japan and Australia. Some recommendations were submitted as a working paper to the 2010 NPT Review Conference held in May this year. At this meeting, the Commission will, among other things, conduct a review of the results of the NPT Review Conference, evaluate and analyze responses to the report, and discuss methods for actual implementation of the recommendations given in the report.

  3. On July 5 (Mon), the day after the meeting, the co-chairs will hold talks with the Austrian Government and relevant officials of international organizations, and hold a briefing at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

  4. The efforts of the Commission have contributed to international debate on maintaining and strengthening the international nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation regime based on the NPT as well as on a roadmap toward a peaceful world free of nuclear weapons. Working with the Government of Australia, the Government of Japan provides support for its efforts, serving as the Secretariat of the Commission.
