  1. The 5th ASEAN-Japan Counter-Terrorism Dialogue, which will be followed by a working-level meeting, will be held from June 22 (Tue) to 24 (Thu) in Bali, Indonesia.

  2. The 5th round of the Dialogue will be co-chaired by Mr. Kiyoshi Araki, Ambassador in Charge of International Counter-Terrorism Cooperation, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, and Mr. Djauhari Oratmangun, Director General for ASEAN Cooperation, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Indonesia.  It will be attended by officials from Japan, all ASEAN Member States and the ASEAN Secretariat.

  3. This Dialogue follows the agreement at the ASEAN-Japan Summit Meeting held in December 2005, and has been held annually since then.  The Dialogue is intended to serve as a forum for reaffirming the importance of the international cooperation in countering terrorism as well as freely and frankly exchanging views between Japan and the ASEAN Member States about the ways to strengthen the cooperation in the region.  This Dialogue also identifies the areas of cooperation, architects concrete projects which benefit the counter-terrorism efforts in this region, and implements those projects by utilizing the Japan-ASEAN Integration Fund (JAIF).  Thus, it has received, due to these unique features, high appraisal from ASEAN Member States as a major framework for promoting progress on regional cooperation for counter-terrorism efforts in this area.

Note: The 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th Dialogues were held on 28 and 29 June 2006 in Tokyo, on 10 and 11 September 2007 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on 14 October 2008 in Luang Phabang, Lao PDR, and on 12 and 13 August 2009 in Nha Trang, Vietnam respectively.
