The First Meeting of the International Commission on Nuclear Non-Proliferation and Disarmament
October 17, 2008
- The first meeting of the International Commission on Nuclear Non-Proliferation
and Disarmament, co-chaired by Ms. Yoriko Kawaguchi, former Minister for
Foreign Affairs of Japan, and Hon. Gareth Evans AO, former Minister for
Foreign Affairs of Australia, will be held in Sydney from October 19 (Sun)
to 21 (Tue).
- The main objective of the International Commission is to issue, prior
to the 2010 NPT Review Conference, a report with recommendations compiled
to contribute to the success of the Conference and from a mid and long-term
point of view aiming toward a world free of nuclear weapons. The International
Commission will hold four meetings before issuing the report and the upcoming
meeting will be the first meeting.
- The Government of Japan looks forward to the wisdom and contribution of Co-chairs Ms. Kawaguchi and Mr. Evans as well as the Commissioners so that the International Commission will be able to present a path toward a peaceful world free of nuclear weapons as well as measures to maintain and strengthen the international nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation regime based on the NPT. The Government of Japan, working with the Government of Australia, will provide the Commission with as much support as possible.
