Japan - SADC Infrastructure Investment Seminar in Tokyo (Overview)

- On Wednesday, March 14, Japan - the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Infrastructure Investment Seminar was held in Tokyo. The overview of the seminar is as follows:
- H.E. Mr. Augusto da Silva Tomas, Minister of Transports of the Republic of Angola, the current chair of SADC, Deputy Executive Secretary (Regional Integration), of the SADC Secretariat, and senior level officials investment experts in SADC countries participated in the seminar. Mr. Toshiyuki Kato, Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs, delivered opening remarks as the host of the seminar. The seminar was also attended by government officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry, Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC), Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and such.
- Against the backdrop of growing interest in investment in African countries in recent years, a total of approximately 240 people attended the seminar, including many individuals directly related to Japanese enterprises.
- At the seminar, officials of the Japanese government gave an explanation of the international trends of infrastructure investment in recent years and the framework of financial modalities for infrastructure investment. Subsequently, the SADC side introduced the investment climate and specific infrastructure investment projects with a focus on energy, transportation, communication, and water in the SADC region. The SADC side also explained that infrastructure investment in the rapidly growing SADC region provides a great business opportunity for Japan. Following the explanation, and participants consisting mainly of those from Japanese enterprises the SADC side exchanged their views actively.
A networking session is scheduled to be held on Thursday, March 15, between individual enterprises and each country of the SADC in order to further crystallize infrastructure investment from Japan.
