Mr. Malcolm Fraser, former Prime Minister of Australia and Honorary Chairman of the InterAction Council, paid a courtesy call on Mr. Katsuya Okada, Minister for Foreign Affairs, on April 21 for approximately thirty-five minutes from 2:00 p.m. An overview of the meeting is as follows.
- At the beginning, Honorary Chairman Fraser handed Minister Okada copies of the “Hiroshima Declaration” and the “Final Communiqué” adopted at the Hiroshima Plenary Session of the InterAction Council and explained contents of these documents. He also stated that it was important to bring about a positive outcome at the 2010 NPT Review Conference to be held in May towards the total abolition of nuclear weapons.
- In response, Minister Okada welcomed the fact that the Annual Plenary Session of the InterAction Council was held this year in Hiroshima, the site of Atomic Bomb attack, under the timely theme of “Zero Nuclear Weapons”, considering the growing international momentum towards nuclear disarmament. He also said that Japan also intended to make proactive efforts towards “a world without nuclear weapons.”
