Japan-ASEAN Relations

July 8, 2024

The 39th meeting of the ASEAN-Japan Forum was held in Bangkok on June 25th.

  1. Since its inception in 1977, the ASEAN-Japan Forum has been held once a year in principle among SOM Leaders of ASEAN and Japan to discuss cooperation between ASEAN and Japan.
  2. This year’s forum was co-chaired by Mr. FUNAKOSHI Takehiro, Senior Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, and H.E. Mrs. Eksiri Pintaruchi, Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Thailand, the current ASEAN Country Coordinator for Japan, and attended by representatives from the ASEAN Member States and the ASEAN Secretariat. A representative from the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste also attended the forum as an observer.
  3. At this year's Forum, the participants confirmed that steady progress has been made in concrete cooperation in line with the three pillars of the Joint Vision Statement adopted at the Commemorative Summit for the 50th Year of ASEAN-Japan Friendship and Cooperation held in Tokyo last December: “Heart-to-heart partners across generations,” “Partners for co-creation of economy and society of the future,” and “Partners for peace and stability.” They also exchanged views to further strengthen Japan-ASEAN relations in a wide range of areas. The participants also exchanged views on regional and international affairs.
