On June 30, commencing at 10:40 a.m. for approximately 15 minutes, Mr. SUGA Yoshihide, Prime Minister of Japan, received a courtesy call from H.E. Mr. Christopher J. Loeak, Acting President and Minister in Assistance to the President and Environment of the Republic of the Marshall Islands, in a video teleconference format. The overview of the courtesy call is as follows.

  1. Prime Minister Suga stated that Pacific Island countries such as Marshall Islands are important partners to Japan, and that he would like to strengthen relations between the two countries. He also stated that he would like to continue working closely with Marshall Islands toward a "Free and Open Indo-Pacific."
  2. Prime Minister Suga expressed his intention to continue supporting Marshall Islands with measures against COVID-19 and to give an assistance for the strengthening of connectivity and the stable electric power supply in Marshall Islands.
  3. In response, Acting President Loeak expressed his gratitude for Japan's long-standing support. Both sides concurred on cooperating toward the success of the 9th Pacific Islands Leaders’ Meeting.
  4. Prime Minister Suga requested cooperation for the stable operation of Japanese fishing vessels and the collection and repatriation of the remains of Japanese soldiers of WWII. Both sides also exchanged views on regional issues, including the response to North Korea. Prime Minister Suga requested understanding and cooperation for the abduction issue, and received support from Acting President Loeak.
