Japan-ROK Foreign Ministers’ Meeting

On December 19, commencing at 12 p.m. for a total of approximately three hours, including a lunch meeting, Mr. Taro Kono, Minister for Foreign Affairs, held a Japan-Republic of Korea (ROK) Foreign Ministers’ Meeting with H.E.Dr.Kang Kyung-wha,Minister of Foreign Affairs of the ROK. The overview of the meeting is as follows.
1. The two ministers devoted the time to hold an in-depth discussion on North Korea’s nuclear and missile issue, which threatens the security of both Japan and the ROK. Minister Kono explained the discussion that took place at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) briefing on Non-Proliferation North Korea on December 15, and the two ministers discussed the way to lead the international community’s efforts to maximize pressure on North Korea by using all available means, which corners North Korea to change its policies, towards the peaceful resolution of the issue. In addition, Minister Kono expressed his expectation that close coordination will be continued on various fronts, including security cooperation and responses at the UNSC, among Japan and the ROK as well as Japan, the ROK and the USA.. Furthermore, in connection with the recent visit to China by H.E. Mr. Moon Jae-in, President of the ROK, the two foreign ministers shared the view that it will be necessary to seek a greater role from China.
2. With regard to Japan-ROK relations, the two ministers shared the view that difficult issues exist between the two countries, but they will cooperate to ensure that the Japan-ROK relationship will move forward in a future-oriented manner, while managing these issues appropriately.
3. From this perspective, Minister Kono once again firmly stated Japan’s position that it is important for the Japan-ROK agreement reached at the end of 2015 to be steadily implemented. In response, Minister Kang explained the current status of the discussions taking place at the taskforce to review the agreement on comfort women issue reached between the governments of Japan and the ROK.
