Japan-Nepal Summit Telephone Call

On September 1, commencing at 4:15 p.m. Japan time (1:00 p.m. local time) for approximately 10 minutes, Ms. TAKAICHI Sanae, Prime Minister of Japan, held a summit telephone call with The Right Honourable Mr. Balendra Shah, Prime Minister of Nepal.
- At the outset, Prime Minister TAKAICHI expressed her condolences for the victims of the flash floods and landslides that occurred on August 26th in the areas near the Nepal-China border, conveyed her heartfelt sympathies to their families and to all those affected by the disaster, and stated that Japan stands in solidarity with Nepal, which is a long-standing friend. She also conveyed that she is filled with grief over Nepal’s difficult situation, noting that Japan and Nepal are both countries prone to natural disasters.
- Prime Minister TAKAICHI requested Nepal’s fullest cooperation for the swiftest possible search and rescue for the five Japanese nationals who are unaccounted for. She then conveyed that the emergency relief goods, including tents and blankets, which the Government of Japan has recently decided to provide will arrive in Nepal shortly. She further stated that Japan is making preparations to provide support, such as contribution to international organizations or the dispatch of a Japan Disaster Relief Team, and that Japan will do everything in its capacity to respond to the situation.
- In response, Prime Minister Shah expressed his deep appreciation for the message of sympathy, assistance, and expression of solidarity from the Government and people of Japan, while he explained the disaster situation and efforts taken by the Government of Nepal.
