Japan-Maldives Foreign Ministers’ Meeting

On September 23, commencing at 4:00 p.m. local time (September 24, 5:00 a.m. Japan time) for approximately 30 minutes, Mr. MOTEGI Toshimitsu, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, who is visiting the United States to attend the United Nation General Assembly, held a Foreign Ministers’ meeting with H.E. Iruthisham Adam, Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Republic of Maldives.
- At the outset, Minister MOTEGI stated that the Maldives is an important partner in realizing a Free and Open Indo-Pacific (FOIP). He expressed his intention to work closely with Minister Iruthisham to strengthen the capability to have freedom to decide for ourselves and resilience in a profoundly challenging and increasingly severe international situation. In response, Minister Iruthisham stated that the Japan’s initiatives are important and that she would like to deepen cooperation.
- Looking forward to the next year’s 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Japan and the Maldives, the two ministers concurred on deepening cooperation in a variety of fields to further strengthen bilateral relations.
- Minister MOTEGI mentioned Japan’s contribution to the Maldives’ self-reliance and development since its independence particularly through the fields of disaster risk reduction and education. He expressed deep appreciation for the Maldives’ unwavering defence cooperation by reiterating that such cooperation between the two countries is the underlying foundation to peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific. In response, Minister Iruthisham expressed gratitude towards Japan for their longstanding cooperation such as seawall and Social Center and her desire to further strengthen cooperation with Japan.
- In addition, both ministers discussed cooperation in the international arena and concurred on maintaining close communication.
