Courtesy Call on H.E. Dr. Abdulla Khaleel, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Maldives by Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs and Special Envoy of the Prime Minister IKUINA Akiko


On July 26, from 2:55 p.m. (10:55 a.m. July 26, local time) for approximately 25 minutes, Ms. IKUINA Akiko, Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, who is visiting Malé, the capital of the Maldives, as Special Envoy of Prime Minister ISHIBA Shigeru to attend the events commemorating the 60th Anniversary of Independence of the Maldives, paid a courtesy call on H.E. Dr. Abdulla Khaleel, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Maldives. The summary of the meeting is as follows.
Following the courtesy call, the signing of the Exchange of Notes for the Grant Aid project titled “Project for Enhancing Disaster Resilience in Malé” was carried out. In addition, later that same day, following the courtesy call on the President, a luncheon was hosted by Foreign Minister Khaleel.
- At the outset, Parliamentary Vice-Minister Ikuina conveyed her congratulations on the 60th anniversary of the Maldives’ independence and expressed Japan’s desire to further deepen cooperation with the Maldives - an important partner in realizing a “Free and Open Indo-Pacific (FOIP)” - in a wide range of areas.
- Foreign Minister Khaleel expressed his gratitude for Japan’s support to date and welcomed the signing of the Exchange of Notes, stating his desire to continue close cooperation in areas such as disaster prevention and security. In response, Parliamentary Vice-Minister Ikuina expressed her intention to contribute to solving the challenges faced by the Maldives through continued cooperation between the two countries.
- The two sides also exchanged views on regional affairs and agreed to continue working together to achieve stability and prosperity across the South Asia region , based on a “Free and Open Indo-Pacific (FOIP)”.
