Foreign Minister Kamikawa and Defense Minister Kihara meeting with Prime Minister Modi of India

On August 19, commencing at 6:30 p.m.(local time; 10:00 p.m. JST) for approximately 65 minutes, Ms. KAMIKAWA Yoko, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, and Mr. KIHARA Minoru, Minister of Defense of Japan, during their visit to New Delhi, India to attend the Third Japan-India Foreign and Defense Ministerial Meeting, paid a courtesy call on H.E. Mr. Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of India, in the presence of H.E. Dr. S. Jaishankar, Minister of External Affairs of India, and H.E. Mr. Rajnath Singh, Minister of Defence of India.The overview is as follows.

  1. At the outset, Prime Minister Modi welcomed the 3rd Japan-India Foreign and Defense Ministerial Meeting and stated the importance of strengthening security and defense cooperation with Japan as an important partner.
    In response, Minister Kamikawa stated that Japan and India have a great responsibility for the peace and prosperity of the Indo-Pacific region and the international society and expressed her wish to “co-create” new solutions to various issues the international society is facing. Minister Kihara stated that the steady progress in security cooperation between Japan and India is proof that both countries recognize the importance of such cooperation, and asked Prime Minister Modi for his continued cooperation.
  2. Minister Kamikawa stated that the further strengthening of the “Japan-India Special Strategic and Global Partnership,” which is now in its 10th year, is essential for both countries to contribute to the international society, and that cooperation in the security field is an important pillar of the partnership, and she expressed her desire to develop economic and development cooperation and people-to-people exchanges as well. Minister Kihara expressed the importance of advancing bilateral security and defense cooperation, including continued joint training and defense equipment and technology cooperation.
    Prime Minister Modimentioned the potential for Japan-India cooperation in technical cooperation, the defence industry and semiconductors, and expressed his desire to further strengthen the “Special Strategic Global Partnership” with Japan for regional peace and stability.
