Japan-Timor-Leste Foreign Minister’s Meeting

On July 27, commencing at 14:30 local time (July 27, 16:30 Japan Time) for approximately 10 minutes, Ms. KAMIKAWA Yoko, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, visiting the Lao People's Democratic Republic to attend the ASEAN-related Foreign Ministers’ Meetings, held a meeting with H. E. Mr. Bendito dos Santos Freitas, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste. The overview of the meeting is as follows.
- At the outset, Minister Kamikawa stated that she would like to further develop bilateral cooperation in a wide range of areas based on "Comprehensive Partnership” on which Japan and Timor-Leste agreed at the end of last year. In response, Minister Freitas expressed his gratitude for Japan’s supports for TimorLeste's nation-building since its independence and stated that he would work with Minister Kamikawa to further enhance cooperative relations between the two countries.
- Minister Kamikawa stated that Japan has been supporting Timor-Leste's nationbuilding since the country's independence and would continue to cooperate in such areas as energy, infrastructure development, public health, human resources development and security. Furthermore, she also stated that Japan would continue to steadily support Timor-Leste's accession to ASEAN. In response, Minister Freitas expressed his gratitude for Japan’s assistance.
- The two ministers also confirmed that they would work together on regional issues.
